The place that Earnest Hemingway called, 'the most beautiful town in the world', is Rich with history. Ronda's origin lay in prehistoric times. In its earliest history Ronda was inhabited by the Celts. At about the time of Christ the Romans were the rulers. On the outskirts of the town is the Roman stronghold of Acinipo with its ancient amphitheatre. After the Romans the Arabs brought prosperity, and named it, 'Madinat Runda'. There are many examples of the Arabic legacy throughout the town. The bullring is the oldest in Spain and the largest in the World. The famous bullfighter, Francisco Romero, revised the corrida to fight the bull on foot with sword and cape instead of on horseback. His grandson, Pedro Romero, is Spain's most famous and revered matador, killing 5,600 bulls in his lifetime. The other famous landmark is the New Bridge that crosses, El Tajo.
